The Livingston County Department of Health was one of the first of nine counties in the nation and the first in New York State to become accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board.

What is Public Health?
Public health is made up of many different parts, but its overall goal is to protect and improve the health of communities and the people in them. Some of this is achieved by monitoring and responding to infectious illness, researching prevention, and making healthy living more easy to access for everyone.
Why does it matter?
Public health professionals deliver necessary services, conduct research, participate in policy making, and offer education to the public in order to prevent disease. Public health also aims to reduce health disparities, which are barriers specific groups of people might experience in accessing health care, such as transportation or internet access. Some of public health's goals are to promote equity, quality, and accessibility in health and health care.
Ten Essential Public Health Services
1. Assess and monitor population health status, factors that influence health, and community needs and assets
2. Investigate, diagnose, and address health problems and hazards affecting the population
3. Communicate effectively to inform and educate people about health, factors that influence it, and how to improve it
4. Strengthen, support, and mobilize communities and partnerships to improve health
5. Create, champion, and implement policies, plans, and laws that impact health
6. Utilize legal and regulatory actions designed to improve and protect the public’s health
7. Assure an effective system that enables equitable access to the individual services and care needed to be healthy
