County Infrastructure Grant Program Awards Village of Nunda $256,652 to Extend Route 408 Water Main

Home Posted on August 25, 2025

NUNDA, N.Y., Aug. 25, 2025 The New York State County Infrastructure Grant Program has awarded $256,652 to the Village of Nunda to support the extension of a water main along Route 408.

The project will increase water supply, reduce strain on aging lines and improve service for many area residents and businesses. Village officials said the extension is especially important to handle expected demand from a proposed sprinkler system at Once Again Nut Butter, Nunda’s largest employer.

“The sprinkler system will be critical for fire safety, but it would put heavy stress on our existing water main if installed today,” said Nunda Village Mayor Jack Morgan. “By extending the line, we can relieve some of the pressure on the system, prevent breaks and provide better service for the 538 combined businesses and residents who will be affected by this project.”

The Route 408 water main extension will improve fire protection, safeguard the village’s reservoir-fed water system and protect the community from costly service disruptions. Officials there say they hope to begin the work soon, but have not yet committed to a timeline for the project.

Livingston County’s Office of Economic Development assisted the village through the County Infrastructure Grant application process. Economic Development Director Bill Bacon said the program demonstrates how public investment can address local needs while supporting business growth.

"Businesses all over Livingston County are faced with challenges where the solutions are often out of their direct control,” he said. “The infrastructure program enabled us to find a way to benefit many community members while resolving the issue faced by the area’s largest employer. The sign of a great program is one that provides a win-win solution for everyone involved."

Nunda’s water system currently serves approximately 1,600 total residents, according to its 2024 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report. Last year, the system treated more than 42 million gallons of water.
