MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y., March 28, 2025 — The Livingston County Department of Health has released the schedule for its 2025 free rabies vaccination clinics.
Available for Livingston County residents only, the clinics offer vaccination against the rabies virus for pet dogs, cats, and ferrets. Organizers stress that pre-registration through the Department of Health’s website is required for all appointments. Pet owners should bring proof of any prior rabies vaccination to receive a three-year certificate. Without proof of prior vaccinations, a one-year certificate will be issued.
In addition, pets must be at least three months old to receive the vaccine. Ferrets must be vaccinated each year. Cats and ferrets are required to arrive in a carrier and dogs must be leashed at all times. Those vaccinating more than five pets at one time should first call the Department of Health at 585-243-7280.
By law, all domestic cats, dogs, and ferrets must be vaccinated against the rabies virus. Health Department officials say failure to vaccinate pets can lead to a significant fine for the owner and leaves the animal vulnerable to a fatal disease.
The first of five scheduled clinics will take place on Wednesday, April 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at 4 Corners Campus located at 4279 Avon-Caledonia Road. For a full listing of each clinic, along with location information, registration links, and more, visit the Livingston County Department of Health’s website. While the clinics are free, donations are gladly accepted at each clinic location due to rising costs.
Rabies is a fatal viral infection transmitted through the saliva and nervous tissue of infected animals. In the United States, most human rabies infections come from bats, however, all mammals are susceptible to rabies. Residents with pets or livestock potentially exposed to rabies should visit the Department of Health’s animal bites webpage for guidance.
