GENESEO, N.Y., Nov. 4, 2024 — The Livingston County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed November 2024 as Adoption Awareness Month across the county.
The designation serves to recognize the compassion and selflessness shown by adoptive families who welcome and nurture children in need of a permanent home. During this time, county officials encourage residents to consider if adoption may be right for their own families. Taking a child in could have a profound impact on their wellbeing and future achievements. Studies show that a stable home environment provides a strong foundation for a healthy and productive life.
As of December 31, 2023, 13,253 children were in foster care in New York State, according to the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. Many of these children have experienced some neglect and/or abuse in their lives. The stability and unconditional love of a family and permanent home are essential for helping these children learn to trust again and reestablish their own self-confidence. They also need supportive families to teach them things many take for granted, such as how to ride a bike, bake cookies, read, dance, or play a team sport.
As families around the county gather to give thanks later this month, the Livingston County Board of Supervisors’ proclamation reminds residents that adoption can offer the hope of a better tomorrow for the more than 13,000 children in foster care statewide.
