Livingston County Recognizes Adoption Awareness Month

Home Posted on November 10, 2025

GENESEO, N.Y., Nov. 10, 2025 —The Livingston County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed November 2025 as Adoption Awareness Month throughout the County, raising awareness of children in foster care and celebrating those families who open their homes to adoption.

The observance corresponds with National Adoption Month, which began in 1995 to highlight the ongoing need to connect children in foster care with permanent, loving families. The month also celebrates the work of foster parents and caregivers who provide structure and stability for children awaiting a forever family.

Approximately 14,000 children in New York State are currently in a foster care setting with roughly 1,400 with the goal of adoption, according to data from the NYS Office of Children and Family Services. Locally, the Livingston County Department of Social Services’ (DSS) Foster Care Unit reported 24 children in DSS custody during the month of September. Foster Care Unit caseworkers provide reunification services to engage families whose children are in foster care. Casework staff work closely with local voluntary agency partners monitoring foster homes for children who may need out of home placement.

The Livingston County Board of Supervisors’ proclamation reminds residents that adoption can offer the hope of a better tomorrow for children in foster care. If you’d like more information on becoming a foster or adoptive parent, please contact the Livingston County Department of Social Services at 585-243-7300.
