Livingston County Highway Department’s Kim DuBois Retires After 40 Years of Service

Home Posted on June 27, 2025

MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y., June 27, 2025 Today, after more than 40 years on the job, Highway Department Senior Account Clerk Kim DuBois is “calling it a career” and beginning her well-deserved retirement from Livingston County.

DuBois first began working here on Sept. 28, 1984, as a part-time account clerk/typist. At the time, the Highway Department was located in a small building on Route 15 in Conesus with just two other employees in the office, former Highway Superintendent Rodney Carpenter and Principal Clerk Cindy Dennison. Long before computers, copy machines, and voicemail, electric typewriters and carbon paper were the go-to tools of the day, recalled DuBois.

“It was a perfect fit,” she said. “I lived within walking distance, and the job gave me the chance to grow and learn.”

Over the next four decades, she did just that, beginning full-time work in 2004 and advancing to senior account clerk/typist in 2008. She’s adapted to numerous changes over the years, including new supervisors, a major office move to the Highway Department’s current location in Mount Morris, and the transition from paper files to digital systems. DuBois was a core part of the team that helped the department evolve and manage these transitions, while continuing to provide residents with an essential public service. For this and many other reasons, she will be greatly missed around the halls at 4389 Gypsy Lane.

"From everyone here at the Highway Department, I want to wish Kim all the best in her well-earned retirement,” said Highway Superintendent Jason Wolfanger. “For more than 40 years, she has been a steadfast pillar of our team. She will be truly missed by all, not just as an outstanding and dedicated employee, but as a good person and a great friend."

Her duties over the years have ranged from processing payroll and invoicing the state for snow and ice removal, to tracking daily road project costs and coordinating the County’s fueling system at Hampton Corners. She’s also served as the office’s de facto complaint department, another of her many day-to-day tasks that helped keep the office team running in “happy mode,” she said.

DuBois credits her longevity in part to the people around her, particularly Administrative Manager Elaine Szoczei, whom she has called her office “superhero,” mentor and friend for nearly three decades.

“Elaine has been my rock here for more than 27 years,” she said. “We’ve tackled a lot of life together and retiring is going to be bittersweet for sure.”

As she retires, DuBois looks forward to more time with her three grown children and eight grandchildren, all of whom live locally. She plans to stay busy attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, tackling home renovation projects, and volunteering at the Livingston County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, where she enjoys visiting with residents.

“Here I am with more than 40 years of public service with Livingston County, and so very thankful that I’ve been able to be at the Highway Department for all of them,” she said. “Whenever someone mentions that they’re on the job search, I always encourage them to look at the job opportunities that Livingston County offers. There are so many ways to learn and grow within the County system.”
