Livingston County Proclaims May as Mental Health Month

GENESEO, N.Y., May 12, 2025 - Reinforcing the County’s ongoing commitment to improving access to care, reducing stigma, and promoting overall mental wellbeing for all residents, the Livingston County Board of Supervisors has declared May as Mental Health Month.

Mental Health Awareness Month has been recognized nationally since 1949. The annual observance shines a light on the importance of mental wellbeing and the need for community-based support. Mental health conditions are among the most common illnesses in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly 1 in 4 American adults had a mental illness in the past year, and almost 3 in 10 high school students reported poor mental health.

“In Livingston County, we understand that supporting mental health is fundamental to the wellbeing of our community,” said Livingston County Board Chair David LeFeber. “This month, and throughout the year, we affirm our commitment to ensuring no one goes through this struggle alone or unsupported. We are investing in access, reducing stigma, and working to build a County where emotional wellbeing is a priority for all of us. We encourage anyone struggling to reach out and take advantage of the professional help available to them through the County today.”

Livingston County Mental Health Services, a County-operated clinic licensed by the New York State Office of Mental Health, offers professional care for both children and adults. There, patients experiencing mental health issues such as stress, significant life-changing events, trauma, and more, receive care from nurse practitioners, therapists, social workers and counselors. Clinics are located in Geneseo and Mount Morris, with telemedicine options available for those unable or unwilling to travel.

With the goal of making mental health resources widely available, Livingston County has committed to making continuous improvements in mental health services and supports by using New York State Opioid Settlement funds to also back mental health recovery efforts. The funding provides transportation to treatment services and increases financial backing for support groups and peer recovery programs in the County.

Health officials also aim to provide increased education around coping strategies through the County’s partnerships with the Genesee Valley Health Partnership and Credible Mind, an online platform that helps residents assess their mental health needs. It also offers personalized reports and directs users to local services, educational resources, and crisis supports. Residents can access the tool at https://livingstoncounty.crediblemind.com/.

Additional resources are available through 211 Life Line, which provides free and confidential information and referrals for mental health and crisis support. Individuals in need can call 2-1-1, text 898211, or visit 211lifeline.org to be connected with human and crisis services providers.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Call or text 988 or chat with someone at 988lifeline.org.
