Livingston County Declares October 2024 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Home Posted on October 04, 2024

GENESEO, N.Y., Oct. 4, 2024 — The Livingston County Board of Supervisors has officially declared October 2024 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Livingston County. The move aims to raise awareness of the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States and to support those affected by the disease.

Among American women, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death. However, early detection through mammography has significantly reduced mortality rates. According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, early detection and improved treatment are believed to have contributed to a 29% reduction in the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. County health officials emphasize the importance of regular screenings, as mammograms can detect breast changes long before physical symptoms appear.

“Every woman needs to be aware of the risk for breast cancer and make an informed decision with her doctor about when and how often she should be screened,” said Livingston County’s Public Health Director, Jennifer Rodriguez. “The science is clear - early detection saves lives. We’re grateful for the county’s commitment to raising awareness of this pressing community health issue.”

The county board also acknowledged the tireless efforts of researchers, scientists, and nonprofit organizations dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer. In addition, the board extended its support to those who continue to cope with breast cancer, as well as to survivors and those advocating for prevention and a cure.
