Home Posted on August 28, 2024

GENESEO, N.Y., Aug. 28, 2024 – Livingston County joins with the community in welcoming SUNY Geneseo students back to the region for the new academic year.

Incoming and returning undergraduate students along with transfer and graduate enrollees from all over the country began classes this week kicking off the 2024-2025 academic year. County officials shared warm greetings for the returning students, noting the county’s long history of partnership and collaboration with those attending the institution of higher learning.

“Each year, returning SUNY Geneseo students revitalize our community with their spirit, small business support, and dedication to volunteerism in our county,” said Livingston County Administrator Ian M. Coyle. “On behalf of Livingston County, I want to extend a heartfelt welcome to the members of the SUNY Geneseo family. We look forward to another year of collaboration and shared success.”

SUNY Geneseo students have a longstanding commitment to volunteerism and partnership with Livingston County. Through programs like Livingston CARES, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance/Tax Counseling for the Elderly, the Office for the Aging’s Home Away from Home Respite Program, the Arc of Livingston-Wyoming Counties LIVES Program, collaboration with the Livingston County Jail and more, Geneseo students have made significant contributions toward improving the lives of county residents and the communities in which they reside.

SUNY Geneseo students play an important role in supporting Livingston CARES, an organization dedicated to humanitarian efforts both locally and nationally. Founded in 2005 in response to Hurricane Katrina, Livingston CARES focuses on disaster relief and recovery, engaging students in meaningful volunteer opportunities that extend beyond the campus. Geneseo students have traveled to disaster-affected areas across the United States, participating in recovery and assistance efforts in Puerto Rico, Mississippi, Texas, and more. Their involvement has been instrumental in raising funds and providing support to communities in need, showcasing a commitment to service and social responsibility. Since its inception, Livingston CARES has also collaborated with numerous local towns and villages. Its work has been formally recognized by the Livingston County Board of Supervisors, which issued a resolution offering its support and encouragement.

Through initiatives like the “Geneseo Goes to Town” day of service, students actively participate in various community projects, including town beautification efforts and support for local organizations. Students, staff, and faculty all participate, volunteering their time in service of local community projects in towns and villages across Livingston County.

In addition, the County has further aligned with SUNY Geneseo in the formation of the Community Resource Network of Livingston County, which provides a system to increase communication and coordination of community resources serving Livingston County residents.
