Livingston County Ranks Among 2025 Healthiest in New York

Home Posted on March 20, 2025

MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y., March 20, 2025 – The Department of Health is pleased to announce that Livingston County is ranked among the healthiest counties in the state, according to the 2025 Annual Data Release from the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps (CHR&R), issued by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

The report shows the County outperforming both New York State and national averages in several key health and well-being indicators, including:

  • Uninsured (Livingston: 4%, N.Y.: 6%, U.S.: 10%)
  • Children in poverty (Livingston: 12%, N.Y.: 19%, U.S.: 16%)
  • Mammography screening rates (Livingston: 51%, N.Y.: 44%, U.S.: 44%)

According to the report, Livingston County is also performing above the New York State and national county average in population health and well-being, and community conditions. The study describes population health as involving optimal physical, mental, spiritual and social well-being, and includes factors such as length and quality of life. Community conditions are designated as the social determinants of health, such as social and economic factors, along with the physical environment and health infrastructure where people live, learn, work, play, worship and age.

“Our strong ranking is a direct reflection not just of the hard work done by our public health system, but also of our collaboration with community partners, our focus on enhancing community health, and our efforts to address social determinants of health,” said County Health Director Jennifer Rodriguez. “We look forward to continuing work that supports the well-being of our communities and we remain committed to ensuring all residents have the opportunity to lead healthy lives.”

The 2025 County Health Rankings take a large number of factors into account when ranking counties nationwide, including drug and alcohol use, access to stable and affordable housing, K-12 school funding, and preventative care access.

“The conditions necessary for healthy, thriving communities don’t happen by chance,” said Dr. Sheri Johnson, CHR&R principal investigator and director of the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. “People in power create and maintain them through laws, policies, culture and norms. Our new model of health broadens our understanding of what shapes health. Communities can build power so that everyone has a say in shaping conditions to live long and well.”
