GENESEO, N.Y., March 5, 2025 - The County Board of Supervisors has named March 2025 as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Livingston County.
The County’s Board encourages all residents to support efforts that work toward enabling people with developmental disabilities to live full and productive lives of inclusion in their communities. First recognized by President Reagan in 1987 to increase “public awareness of the needs and the potential of Americans with developmental disabilities,” the month also serves to educate the public on the various unique issues affecting people with developmental disabilities, including educational segregation, healthcare access, and occupational training.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) affect more than seven million Americans and their families. IDD is a broad term to describe an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior. The New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities currently operates a system of support serving more than 130,000 New Yorkers.
The County’s proclamation also recognizes the work done by the Arc of the United States, the nation’s leading volunteer-based organization which actively promotes and protects the rights of people with developmental disabilities. As a disability rights organization, it works with and for people with developmental disabilities to achieve change and improve lives. Locally, The Arc GLOW, which encompasses Genesee, Livingston, Ontario and Wyoming counties, has numerous programs and services in place to support those with developmental disabilities, including transportation, residential, vocational, business, and adult clinical services.
