Livingston County Announces $1.09 Million Grant for Town of York Transportation Improvements

Home Posted on June 28, 2024

YORK, N.Y., June 28, 2024 — The Town of York has been awarded a $1,090,557 grant from New York State (NYS) as part of its initiative to enhance alternative transportation options in local communities.

The funding, provided through the Federal Highway Administration's Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and administered by the NYS Department of Transportation, will support transportation safety improvements for the Hamlet of Greigsville near the intersection of State Routes 63 and 36, close to York Central School. Key improvements include construction of new sidewalks, installation of mid-crossings, additional signage, and tree plantings. In 2018 the Town completed The Hamlet of Greigsville Transportation Plan focused on safety, place and prosperity, which recommended these safety improvements.

"This grant represents a major investment in York's infrastructure and pedestrian safety," said Livingston County Administrator Ian M. Coyle. "We're glad to see the state recognizing the importance of creating more walkable communities in our county."

The project aligns with New York State's climate goals by promoting alternative, environmentally friendly modes of travel. Once completed, it will improve driver and pedestrian safety in the Hamlet, and create a more accessible area for all residents and visitors.

York Town Supervisor Gerald Deming commented, “With the heavy traffic we see at this intersection, this funding is critical for making the area safer for our residents and pedestrians, especially students at the local school who cross the street to reach the new truck stop there. We're excited to begin work on this project and see the positive impact it will have on our community.”
