MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y., June 20, 2024 — The Livingston County Department of Health, in partnership with members of the Livingston County Food Security coalition, has created a comprehensive food resource list to aid County residents experiencing food insecurity.
Food insecurity is typically characterized by limited or uncertain access to adequate food due to limited economic resources, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. The County’s food resource list combines information on how to access pop-up food pantries, church meal offerings, senior nutrition meal sites, home delivered meals, and other emergency food providers serving Livingston County in one convenient location.
“No one should have to go hungry, especially with so many dedicated organizations working to get nutritious food to our neighbors," said Livingston County Director of Community Health Margaret Betette. "Committee members provided input and updated information to ensure the list is as comprehensive and accurate as possible. With all the available programs and services listed in one place, it will be much easier for those in need to find assistance near them now."
In December of 2023, the New York State (NYS) Department of Health released the results of a self-reported food insecurity survey. It showed that approximately one in four adults in NYS experience food insecurity. In Livingston County, 14.2% of adults reported experiencing food insecurity at some time over the previous 12 months. Adults experiencing food insecurity have a higher probability of several chronic diseases, including hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer, asthma, arthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and kidney disease.
Food security is a key focus area of the Livingston County Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). In 2022, the County conducted a food security survey, which reported that nearly 32% of respondents were not receiving adequate food in a given day. Additionally, the survey found that limited financial resources along with difficulty accessing grocery stores were two of the largest contributors to food insecurity throughout the County.
