Conesus Lake

Long considered the Jewel of Livingston County, Conesus Lake is the western-most Finger Lake in Upstate New York and is known the world over as a year-round fishing, sporting and recreation destination. Thirty minutes south of Rochester, NY, Conesus Lake is both a popular recreation and tournament destination sporting productive bass, walleye, northern pike and tiger muskie fisheries.

The lake serves as the water source for more than 20,000 people, from the Village of Avon and Village of Geneseo , extending as far west as the Town of York, as far south as the Town of Groveland, and as far north as the Village of Avon.

Water Quality

The Conesus Lake Watershed Management Plan guides the implementation of water quality improvement projects on the Lake and throughout the watershed. The plan, completed in March 2003, features recommendations for projects in key water quality improvement areas, which are measured in yearly water quality monitoring carried out by SUNY Geneseo and SUNY Brockport.

Conesus Lake Watershed Council

The Conesus Lake Watershed Council is an inter-municipal organization established in 2003 to govern the implementation of the Conesus Lake Watershed Management Plan. Council membership is comprised of towns and villages with land within the watershed boundaries and water purveyors who use Conesus Lake as a public water supply. The Council oversees the Conesus Lake Watershed Management Program and the Conesus Lake Watershed Inspection Program. 

The Council also oversees three standing committees: 

  • Agricultural Committee 
  • Public Education and Outreach
  • Technical Advisory Committee 

Additional working groups are formed as needed and report to the Technical Advisory Committee. Working groups are currently focused on the issues of Invasive Species Prevention and Stream & Stormwater Management.
